family + cultural relevance

Post-family reunion in Colorado, I'm here chillin with my grandma in Pensacola, Florida. We've been doing the usual family bonding things, you know, drinking natty lite and watching 'culturally relevant' films of yonder year. Recap--

Last night: Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) [side note: the year my father was born] 

Starring James Cagney (dancing! for the first time on film!) as George M. 'George Michael' Cohan, composer of SUCH GREAT PATRIOTIC HITS as 'yankee doodle dandy,' 'you're a grand old flag,' and 'over there.' Phew! but seriously folks, let's have a chat about patriotism THEN and NOW and how it's portrayed in POPULAR CINEMA, k? 

Tonight: The Jazz Singer (1980)

Starring NEIL DIAMOND. Not to be confused with the jazz singer of 1927- which, last i checked, couldn't be produced en masse on dvd because of the controversial cover image, of Al Jolson in black-face. In the 1980 version, neil diamond plays young married new york cantor gone-LA to be a star/ fall in love with a shiksa.

What's your take on new/old Jazz Singer? on remakes in general? on 'classic films'? on patriotism? if you could redesign the american flag, what would it look like? if you were neil diamond, would you abandon 5 generations of cantors to pursue your dream of living in la and marrying a shiksa? discuss.

i'm fairly certain that i was one of the only two people in new york city who had to work yesterday. i painted walls all day at my gallery. now i'm covered in red and white and feelin' pretty blue.

y'all. i'd really like to apologize for being somewhat delinquent in the blogosphere recently. my 'net's been wonky and i've recently become obsessed with this gr8 show FRIDAY NIGHTS LIGHTS. srsly. i sweeear i'll be beeettter when this net stuff is al figured out. THX 4 UR PATIENCE.

take a walk on the wild side

today i went on an adventure. i went for my first walk down 125th street, or, Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. apparently some comedian has a bit about how you know where the "shotty" area of a city begins because there's a street called Martin Luther King Blvd. well, we live there. found some pretty cool things though: a few barber shops (one REALLY CLASSY LOOKING ONE, TOO!) a few chinese restaurants a few nail salons (see D J Nail in the photo which i did not take) and a few condom wrappers on the street. all in all it was pretty exciting. a few elderly black men asked me how i was doing/called me beautiful. 

ERR AND DAY

We all make mistakes, right? LIKE THIS ONE, FOR EXAMPLE!! 

ALSO, we all run errands. Today I think I'll "do laundry" in my "basement"... it costs a buck fiddy for wash and another buck fiddy for drying.
