postscript

whawahwoooowah
althought facebook WON'T REMIND YOU: it's my co-blogger (when we're both not 2 laz-e) gordo's birthday! let's all appreciate her beauty. from behind. while trying to hail a cab in rome.

family + cultural relevance

Post-family reunion in Colorado, I'm here chillin with my grandma in Pensacola, Florida. We've been doing the usual family bonding things, you know, drinking natty lite and watching 'culturally relevant' films of yonder year. Recap--

Last night: Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) [side note: the year my father was born]
Starring James Cagney (dancing! for the first time on film!) as George M. 'George Michael' Cohan, composer of SUCH GREAT PATRIOTIC HITS as 'yankee doodle dandy,' 'you're a grand old flag,' and 'over there.' Phew! but seriously folks, let's have a chat about patriotism THEN and NOW and how it's portrayed in POPULAR CINEMA, k?

Tonight: The Jazz Singer (1980)
Starring NEIL DIAMOND. Not to be confused with the jazz singer of 1927- which, last i checked, couldn't be produced en masse on dvd because of the controversial cover image, of Al Jolson in black-face. In the 1980 version, neil diamond plays young married new york cantor gone-LA to be a star/ fall in love with a shiksa.
   <>  ?

What's your take on new/old Jazz Singer? on remakes in general? on 'classic films'? on patriotism? if you could redesign the american flag, what would it look like? if you were neil diamond, would you abandon 5 generations of cantors to pursue your dream of living in la and marrying a shiksa? discuss.

take a walk on the wild side

today i went on an adventure. i went for my first walk down 125th street, or, Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. apparently some comedian has a bit about how you know where the "shotty" area of a city begins because there's a street called Martin Luther King Blvd. well, we live there. found some pretty cool things though: a few barber shops (one REALLY CLASSY LOOKING ONE, TOO!) a few chinese restaurants a few nail salons (see D J Nail in the photo which i did not take) and a few condom wrappers on the street. all in all it was pretty exciting. a few elderly black men asked me how i was doing/called me beautiful.

ERR AND DAY

We all make mistakes, right? LIKE THIS ONE, FOR EXAMPLE!!
ALSO, we all run errands. Today I think I'll "do laundry" in my "basement"... it costs a buck fiddy for wash and another buck fiddy for drying.

more on cupcakes

While Gordon has an excellent point regarding Magnolia Bakery and Prime (THE BEST MOVIE IN ALL THE WORLD EVER), here's the thing: any good Prime fan will remember the point in the movie ("learn your fucking lesson day" as you may know it) when Morris learns that Magnolia Bakery DECEIVED HIM in their pie sale to him that day- either he ordered banana cream and was given lemon cream, or vice versa. Perhaps deceit of our beloved sociopath Morris is reason enough to boycott Magnolia?

cupcakes

Last night someone sent me a link of the 10 things not to do in New York City. Some listed very obvious things such as do not for the love of god take a carriage ride through central park, don't go to the top of the empire state building (as top of the rock and rainbow room are far superior), and don't eat a pre-theater dinner in Times Square, as Hells Kitchen just below is cheaper and just better. The other "don't" probably most distressing to tourists was Magnolia Bakery. Now, this bakery holds a special place in our hearts for one reason and it is not that Carrie Bradshaw went there once, but because of Morris, our "pie-throwing sociopath" from "Prime." Heeeey MOrrrrris! Buttercup on 72nd is pretty good, though, and now they deliver to your home!

it's already been written

yesterday prince harry played polo on governor's island. apparently the first (or possibly second, they were unclear about that) polo game played in new york since 1941. first- prince harry, what an attractive lad! second- we met some fellas on the ferry back to manhattan- when i mentioned that i live in harlem, he said "me too! 86th street!" i mean, what? 86th street has never, ever been harlem. maybe on the east side like 50 years ago. maybe. but come on. seriously.

when i said that harlem was the new williamsburg, he got offended. apparently he just bought an apartment in williamsburg (YET MORE PROOF THAT HE IS NOT FROM HARLEM).

in the meantime, here's a SWEET PIC of prince harry on a polo pony.

posting now

that i am home in the less hipster-y neighborhood of chevy chase dc. unlike parker i did nothing of importance today, except complete my first solo long distance drive. i made one stop about 20 minutes in on the nj turnpike due to that iced coffee, though. then again to wait in line for gas, because you can't fill your own tank in jersey. then i made chocolate chip cookies while watching finding forrester, which is about an aspiring 16 year old writer from the bronx named jamal. after being in spain (a country with absolutely no diversity) for five months, i seriously enjoyed following jamal's adventures alongside sir thomas sean connery.

speaking of new york again, when parker and i entered the city on sunday we drove south from the gw bridge and witnessed many stereotypical harlemesque scenes. basketball, everyone sitting on the front stoop, and a mcdonalds, radio shack, and foot locker all next to each other. like those in williamsburg, they have stylin' kicks. our favorite but more unrelated sighting was a store sign that read: 59 cent, 79 cent, and 99 cent x-press. below the word x-press we noted that it said "everything 99 cents or more." picture to be sent to failblog soon.

--gordon

the world is your cloister!

why hasn't gordon posted to this yet? she must be home by now- she left the city at 11.38 am this morning (after a nice nussbaum breakfast of bagels and iced coffee)! i spoke to her as she exited the tunnel in baltimor(on)! gordon? blog!

in other news, i did some VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TODAY. like, i had two interviews and got approximately one and one half internships. afterwards i gave $5 to a HRC activist- i'm such a sucker for gay rights. also, i took a quiz on facebook: WHICH ART HISTORIAN ARE YOU? i am Linda Nochlin. probably because i go to a women's college. whether or not i go to a coed institution wasn't a specific question on the quiz but the internet must have picked up some feminist vibes. another important and exciting thing i did today: saw my first (and probably last, of '09 anyway) person associated with FLEET WEEK. in whole foods at columbus circle. he was young and handsome and wearing a NAVY MARATHON shirt. it was unrequited love at first sight. unfortunately fleet week ends tomorrow, so there go my hopes and dreams of being married to a navy officer by graduation.

IN ANY EVENT: today the 1 train skipped from 103rd to 137th. it was awkward, a lot of confused hipsters ended up in actual harlem. i giggled, then remembered that i was carrying a very heavy bag of groceries and stopped giggling as i made my way the 12 blocks south to 125th.

more observations of harlem hipsters coming soon, in the meantime, czech out this awesome vid of manuele dancing and singing about boobs (and whitney throwing sugar packets at him).

luvv,
PARKER.

28 hours and counting

on ambien, painted or colored surfaces become far more interesting. intriguing. inspiring.
this framed print, for example, found in the basement of Gordon's parent's house just so happens to be three dimensional at this point. now Gordon is sitting on the floor facing it desperately trying to prevent a horse-drawn cart from colliding with an old-style car. the lights, it seems, are reflecting off the wet surface of the street and shining into our very own (very harlem small) living room. who knew michael delacroix was so into that kind of thing? switch of attention to GILMORE GIRLS on the PLASMA SCREEN TV (left by boy who loves the roommate, way to go FELS!)

gilmore more more confusing when mind is running on ambien pace.

HARLEM IS THE NEW WILLIAMSBURG

truth.

today we (pictured below) drove to new york in Gordon's parents' minivan. actually, i drove. it was a rough journey, what with the early disappointment in Greenberry's lack of apple fritters, but we soldiered on, even managing to get EVERYTHING OUT OF THE MINIVAN AND INTO THE BUILDING by nightfall. (if any of you were questioning the power and ability of students of all-female institutions, there you go: we are just as strong and capable as 20ish female students of coed institutions). in any event, we've been up too long. Gordon is already snoring softly beside me. how cute!

let it be known: harlem is the new williamsburg. filled with skinny jeans and dark rimmed glasses and kids who use overpriced text books as coasters for their PBR. soon (say, next summer) MGMT and Yo La Tengo will be playing shows in emptied out pools up here, but YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. at hipsterrunon(sentences).

goodnight and good luck, and don't get shot
